in the house를 살펴보아야 한다.

첫 번쩨 문장의 명사
the house가
두 번째 문장에서
전치사 in과 함께
부사구 in the house로 사용되었다.

명사와 부사의 관계
이것이 관계부사이다.

 
두 번째 문장의 명사(또는 대명사)를 which로 바꾼다.
그럼 전치사+which의 구조가 되고  in which/that
전치사 + 관계대명사를 두 번째 문장 제일 앞으로 옮기면
in which we live
여기서 다시
전치사+which를
관계부사 where로 바꾸면
That is the house where we live.
두 개의 단문이 하나의 문장으로 연결되어 복문이 된다.
This is the house. We live in the house.
This is the house in which we live.
This is the house where we live.
 
 
전치사+관계대명사에서
관계대명사만
두 번째 문장의 앞으로 보내어
두 문장을 연결하면

That is the house which we live in.
That is the house that we live in. (which 대신 that 사용가능)
That is the house we live in. (which/that이 전치사 in의 목적격이고, 전치사 + 관계대명사의 형태가 아니므로 생략 가능)
 
이때 in도 관계대명사를 따라
앞으로 이동하면
That is the house in which we live.
That is the house in that we live. (X) (관계대명사 that은 전치사와 함께 사용 불가능)
That is the house in we live. (X) (전치사와 관계대명사가 나란히 사용되었을 경우 관계대명사 which 생략 불가능)
 
전치사 + 관계대명사를
관계부사 where / when/ why / how로 바꾸면 된다.
관계부사로 바꿀 때는
선행사를 잘 살피고
뒷 문장에서의 전치사+명사/대명사의 역할도 살펴서
when / where / why / how 중 하나로 바꾸면 된다.
관계부사는 that으로 바꾸어 써도 된다.
 
That is the house in which we live.
That is the house where we live.
That is the house that we live.
 
특이하게도
That is the way. I solved the problem in the way.
That is the way in which I solved the problem.
That is the way how I solved the problem. (X)
That is the way that I solved the problem
That is the way I solved the problem.
That is how I solved the problem.
the way 와 how는 둘 중 하나만 사용해야 한다.

이렇게 선행사+관계부사가 형성되면
(관계부사를 저절로 생각나게 하는 명사와
관계부사가 함께 사용되면)
선행사와 관계부사 중 하나를 생략해도 된다.
This is the reason. He helped the old for the reason.
This is the reason why he helped the old.
This is why he helped the old.
This is the reason he helped the old.
 
관계부사도
제한적용법과 계속적용법이 있다.
why와 how는 계속적용법에서 사용되지 않는다.
 
계속적용법은 comma를 쓴 다음,
그 뒤에 앞 문장의 명사를, 또는 앞 문장 전체를
추가 설명하는 문장을 덧붙여 주는 것을 말한다.
해석은 앞에서 뒤로 순차적으로 한다.
I was in New York in 2001, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center. (계속적용법, when 절이 앞 문장의 2001을 추가 설명하고 있다.)
나는 2001년에 뉴욕에 있었는데, 그 해에 테러리스트들이 세계무역센터를 공격했다.
I was in New York in 2001 when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center. (제한적용법, when 절이 선행사 2001을 수식한다. = 형용사절 역할)
나는 테러리스트들이 세계무역센터를 공격한 2001년에 뉴욕에 있었다.
 
제한적용법의 관계사절일지라도
문장 중간에 삽입될 경우
문맥 파악을 쉽게 하도록 하기 위해
관계사절 앞뒤에 comma를 넣어준다.
The house was built in 2020. We live in the house.
The house, where we live, was built in 2020.
